Thomes Jakob Hilfigerwas born 1952 in Emira, New York. At the young age of seventeen, and with a seed money of only 150 dollars he made his first contact with the fashion world, supplying Hippie-Chic to students in New York. Soon after, he successfully opened his first shop "People's Place", and just nine years later he could call a chain of ten boutiques, throughout upstate New York his own. In the seventies Tommy Hilfiger began designing himself, and initially worked for Jordache until he launched his own label in 1985.
Through his extraordinary sense for publicity, Tommy Hilfiger managed to place himself besides Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren as one of "the four great mens-fashion designers of america" with his very first advertising campain. Five years after the founding of Tommy Hilfiger, the companys turnover already exceeded 25 million dollars.
Until the beginnig of the nineties, Tommy Hilfigers and Calvin Kleins target groups we're almost identical: mainly white american men, between 25 and 45 years of age, with average income. This changed when rapper Snoop Dog appeared on american hit tv show "Saturday Night Live", sporting a Tommy Hilfiger Shirt. Young black teenagers discover Tommy Hilfiger's fashion for themselves, and Hilfiger started to design more casual, baggy-style fashion and street wear. In turn, the companys profits sky-rocketed.
Hilfiger went public in 1992 and years of expansion and broadening of the portfolio followed. The product range now contained accessories, watches, perfumes, children's clothes, ladies fashion, swimwear and more. In 1995 Tommy Hilfiger was voted "designer of the year" by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Today Hilfigers still growing fashion-empire turns over 400 million dollars every year.
